Aug. 3rd, 2036 11:50 am when he was still young (a young man, he'd say; a boy), jody starr and four of his friends helped save the world. strange creatures seemed to be hiding in plain sight, seeking to take over and destroy the earth. knowing that something had to be done, the children — all of whom began to manifest psychic abilities to aid in their fight against evil — banded together. though the journey was long, and the fight arduous, they overcame the alien threat. it's been almost thirty years since then. jody — nicknamed "double r" by his childhood friends on account of his last name — still lives in the same small town he grew up in. in the intervening years, he's become a police officer, in some futile attempt to regain a measure of control over his life. as time has passed, the immensity of what they did as children has only weighed more heavily on jody's shoulders, especially as it's become less and less clear whether any of it was actually real. every now and then, there's just enough hint of the supernatural in the world for him to believe that it was, but his abilities are long gone, and any history of the battle they fought is nowhere to be found, just like any other childhood session of playing pretend. in which case, what's the point? most of the boyish sweetness he'd possessed has dissipated into bitterness and doubt, as evidenced by his messy personal life. he's a man of few friends, having gone through one divorce in the kind of town that doesn't forget that sort of thing, and by all accounts failing in his present relationship. |
